Margaret Tafoya (1904-2001) “Corn Blossom” was the Matriarch of the Santa Clara Pueblo. Margaret was a prolific potter, using her deep carved technique in both black and red ware pottery. She made fewer wedding vases than other shapes. This lovely wedding vase, made in the late 1960’s to early 1970’s depicts the Avanyu, or “water serpent” design, so common in Santa Clara today. Margaret won many awards for her work throughout the Southwest including the 1984 National Heritage Fellowship awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
