This tall jar by Jorge Quintana, with long sweeping line work illustrates what the potters in Mata Ortiz refer to as movimiento, movement. This style was first utilized by Juan Quezada and later taken up by his sister Lydia and brother Nicolas Quezada. It is difficult to achieve curved line work unless the painter has a steady hand and an eye for composition.

This is another example of Jorge experimenting with clay color. He used white clay from the Mata Ortiz area with another clay he collected from the colored hills between Cameron, AZ and Tuba City that gives this pot subtle lavender undertones. We have never seen this clay used by anyone else.

Purchased from Jorge on March 13, 2005.

14" tall, 10" diameter. Signed.
